Hospitality Collaborations with Hilary McNevin [Interview]

Hilary McNevin from Turnip Media shares the key ingredients for a memorable and successful collaboration for brands in the hospitality industry.

Recently, I was lucky to spend some time with Hilary McNevin, founder of Turnip Media to discuss the ins and outs of hospitality collaborations. Her wealth of knowledge began with her love for “being around a table” which enabled her to freelance for well known media publications such as The Age, Broadsheet, The Guardian and SBS Food.

There are so many hospitality collaborations happening in the food space. But what is it that makes your collaboration stand out from the rest?

Collaborations can be an exciting way to blend two either harmonising or contrasting hospitality brands whilst expanding databases and networks.  While collaborations can be amazing, they do need structure, clarity and a good plan.

In this interview Hilary shares how to secure a collaboration, how to remain resilient after rejection, and how to become recognised and sought out by other brands.

Hilary emphasises the need for enthusiasm and passion from both parties once a collaboration is initiated. She stresses “if you’re doing it for the money, don’t do it.” While financial gain is always a motive, it shouldn’t be the main motivation because there is so much more to extract from a hospitality collaboration than revenue on its own.
